When Samantha got home, she saw the living room was brightly lit.
The housekeeper turned on the lights in the living room after cleaning every day, so when Samantha and Leonardo came home, it always felt bright and a little less lonely, even if nobody was home.
Since Leonardo wasn't around, Samantha didn't feel like dining outdoors. She didn't get the chef to cook either, so she just went through the ingredients in the fridge and made something simple.
She'd read somewhere online that eating alone was the new definition of loneliness, and it just started to feel more relatable now.
Holding her phone, Samantha thought about texting Leonardo, but upon remembering he was in a meeting, she didn't want to disturb him. Then, Layla popped into her mind.
Layla was probably having a romantic dinner with Ethan, so texting her now would be kind of interrupting the atmosphere.
Eventually, Samantha switched on the projector in the living room and ate alone as she watched a variety show. It helped chase away some of the loneliness.
…
As the night wore on to 11:00 pm, the meeting showed no signs of wrapping up.
Leonardo and Simon didn't get to eat after work before rushing to the meeting. Right then, they were both starving.
Leonardo suffered from heartburn. Seated next to him, Simon subtly handed him a small bread roll, resulting in him glancing at Simon.
Simon tried to look innocent, explaining, "Fine. I admit it. I sneak food into my pocket at work, but this is different. Don't give me that look. My heart can't take it."
Leonardo was speechless but didn't make a big deal out of it. He just tossed the small bread roll to Simon with a hint of disgust. He wasn't going to eat some awful bread roll.
The next moment, Simon firmly shoved the small bread roll back into Leonardo's hand. "Please eat it. Mrs. Garrett told me to give it to you, and I can't let her down."
Leonardo asked, "Sam?"
Simon replied, "Yes."
