"Pack up your things and come with me," Tommy instructed.
Mavis was baffled. "But I haven't finished my work…"
"It's your first day, so it's normal that you're not done yet. This is urgent. Let's go."
With no other choice, Mavis saved her unfinished documents, shut down her computer, and followed Tommy out.
He motioned for her to walk ahead, warning the gossiping employees sternly.
"Focus more on your work and less on personal matters. Mr. Nicholls dislikes this kind of unprofessional behavior. Don't be surprised when you're all fired if he catches wind of it."
The group huddled at their desks, pretending to be busy.
Once Tommy left, the snide comments resumed.
"Would you look at that? We were just speculating, and Tommy's already coming to her defense. Seems like this new girl has him wrapped around her finger."
"Why is she so lucky? Just because she's slightly pretty? Bet she's flirtatious behind the scenes, probably seducing men left and right."
One of the delusional female employees rolled her eyes and commented, "Bagging Tommy isn't much of an achievement. If she's got real skills, she'd go after Mr. Nicholls. He's still single, you know. He's handsome and rich, a true catch. Who knows, maybe he'll fancy me one day!"
She giggled coyly, covering her face with her hands.
The others did not hold back, raining on her parade.
"Dream on, honey. You're not even as pretty as Mavis!"
In the few minutes after Mavis left, she became the prime target of all the gossiping female employees in the department, quickly becoming the focus of resentment and isolation.
…
Mavis rode the elevator with Tommy, keeping her head down and feeling down.
Tommy tried to console her, saying, "Where there are many girls, there's bound to be gossip. Mrs. Nicholls, you don't have to stoop to their level. If you have any trouble, just come to me. I'll help you."
"Thank you, but… I'm just an intern at the NC Group, not Mrs. Nicholls."
"Uh…"
Tommy did not know how to respond to that.

The readers' comments on the novel: Wait, She’s a Billionaire (Sheena Lawson)
The novel is too abusive it spoils the joy of reading it. I hate the punishment part between sheena and Eliot....
