Nathaniel could not help but smile when he saw how happy Mavis was.
Once they were seated, the servants quietly left the room, leaving them alone in the huge dining room.
The silence was almost overwhelming, with Mavis feeling her heart thudding in her chest.
Seeing that Mavis was just standing frozen in place and staring at the table, he stood and placed a few candles on her cake.
"Why are you still standing there?"
"Oh… Coming!" Mavis replied, hurrying to his side.
Together, they finished placing the candles and lit them.
The lights dimmed, and Nathaniel took her hands, pressing them together.
"Make a wish."
His tone was as cold as ever, but Mavis was already content with his effort.
She clasped her hands and closed her eyes, making her wish.
Nathaniel watched her profile until she opened her eyes, asking, "What did you wish for?"
She smiled mysteriously. "It's a secret."
Telling would ruin the wish.
After blowing out the candles, a playful idea struck her.
She dabbed some cream on Nathaniel's nose and quickly did the same to her own, fearing he might get angry.
Genuinely happy, she said, "Thank you for spending my birthday with me."
As she looked up, Nathaniel lowered his head.
They were so close now that they could hear each other's breaths.
In the dim light, Mavis's cheeks turned an even deeper shade of red, and her already pale skin was even smoother and tender up close.
Nathaniel was unexpectedly moved by her sparkling eyes.
He lifted her chin and kissed her on impulse.
Feeling his cold lips, Mavis froze.
This was only the second time he had kissed her voluntarily.
His kiss was intense, and his hands found her waist, pulling her closer.

The readers' comments on the novel: Wait, She’s a Billionaire (Sheena Lawson)
The novel is too abusive it spoils the joy of reading it. I hate the punishment part between sheena and Eliot....
