Mavis tried to lie through the conversation, but Gabrielle was not easily fooled.
"Tell me the truth. What's going on between you and Nate? The sight of you two acting this way is suffocating."
It was indeed suffocating.
Mavis felt a headache coming from just hearing Nathaniel's name.
She quickly masked the sadness in her eyes and assured, "It's nothing, really. You're overthinking it. He's just very busy."
Sensing Mavis's reluctance to answer, Gabrielle had no choice but to drop the subject.
They spent the rest of the day in the living room.
Mavis sat on the sofa, absorbed in her tablet, while Gabrielle chatted with her from time to time.
At around 5 p.m., the front door of the Nicholls residence opened.
Nathaniel had returned, and the setting sun cast a golden glow on him, softening his features.
As he changed his shoes in the foyer, he noticed Gabrielle and Mavis sitting by the windows.
When Mavis saw Nathaniel, she got up and left.
Gabrielle, on the other hand, cheerfully ran over to take Nathaniel's briefcase.
"Nate, why does Mae run away when she sees you? It's like a mouse seeing a cat. Did you—"
"It's nothing."
"There's nothing."
Both answered at the same time with cold indifference.
The more they insisted it was nothing, the more it was clear something was wrong.
Since they were both present, Gabrielle seized the moment and said, "Can't you two stop this? Isn't it better for a couple to be loving? And Nate, Grandma is coming back soon."

The readers' comments on the novel: Wait, She’s a Billionaire (Sheena Lawson)
The novel is too abusive it spoils the joy of reading it. I hate the punishment part between sheena and Eliot....
