Though Mavis had hoped to avoid discussing this with Mildred, she could not deny that she had returned for the divorce and Callum's custody.
Since Mildred had brought it up, there was no avoiding it.
"Yes, I'm sorry. Years ago, I had no choice but to leave Callum and go abroad. I've missed him every moment since. As a mother yourself, surely you can understand my feelings?"
She kept her gaze lowered, her tone becoming more respectful.
"Nathaniel has already agreed, and I hope you'll be understanding too."
From the beginning, Mildred was always kind to Mavis, never overbearing, and was a young-at-heart elder.
She had even supported Mavis through the divorce discussions.
Mavis thought Mildred was different from other traditional elders, yet when it came to Callum's custody, Mildred's usual friendliness vanished and was replaced by a grave seriousness.
"Mae, I know you love Callum. And I understand how painful these years apart must have been for you…"
Mildred sighed and added, "But we all love Callum, and we've watched him grow. Now that he's older and easier to care for, you want to take him away. It breaks my heart."
Mavis hung her head lower. "I'm sorry."
Mildred sighed again. "I can stay out of your marriage issues with Nate, and your future is yours to decide. But you can't take Callum. He's the family's first grandson and likely the Nicholls estate's future heir. This is non-negotiable."
Mavis's face fell, but she remained silent.
…
Half an hour later, Mavis left the study, her expression somber and distracted.
"Mommy!"
Callum suddenly hugged Mavis's leg, looking up at her with a pout.
"What were you talking about with Grandma Mildred? I've been waiting forever!"

The readers' comments on the novel: Wait, She’s a Billionaire (Sheena Lawson)
The novel is too abusive it spoils the joy of reading it. I hate the punishment part between sheena and Eliot....
