Nathaniel's brow furrowed slightly, his forehead beaded with cold sweat, but he remained motionless and silent.
Mildred's hand trembled as she averted her gaze, forcing herself not to watch as the paddle fell. She had always felt the deepest sympathy for Nathaniel's circumstances, and each strike seemed to land heavily on her own heart, making it ache.
Her original intention had been to scare him into compliance, hoping Nathaniel would agree to retrieve the divorce agreement, and they could move on.
However, the stubborn boy refused to back down.
"Grandma, stop! Don't hit him anymore!"
A frantic voice called out from the doorway.
Mavis rushed in, throwing herself over Nathaniel and holding him tightly.
The servant quickly withdrew the paddle about to fall, looking uncertainly to Mildred for guidance.
"Why are you here?" Nathaniel looked up, his eyes filled with concern for her safety.
"Move away."
"I won't," Mavis replied. "Are you stupid? How can you just take a beating without even trying to dodge?"
Mildred did not miss the worry in Mavis' eyes. She raised an eyebrow, smiling as she realized the punishment had not been in vain after all.
She cleared her throat, reassuming her stern demeanor, and said, "Mae, this is a Nicholls family matter. You're about to divorce Nate, so you shouldn't interfere."
Mavis looked up, her worry evident. "Grandma, Nathaniel cares about you more than anyone. How can you bear to hurt him like this?"
"If you want me to stop, there's one condition—you two need to stay together and forget about this divorce nonsense."
No divorce?
Mavis froze, slowly lowering her head without a word.
Before coming, she had been prepared to sign a new divorce agreement without the custody clause. She never expected Mildred to demand they stay married.

The readers' comments on the novel: Wait, She’s a Billionaire (Sheena Lawson)
The novel is too abusive it spoils the joy of reading it. I hate the punishment part between sheena and Eliot....
