Nathaniel felt a strange sense of happiness when he saw Mavis worried about him.
He decided to open up about his past and said, "The previous head of the Nicholls family was my second brother, Romello. Most of my painful memories in this family involve him."
He adjusted his seat a little more, then continued, "As a child, I didn't have my pen, so I borrowed his. When my mother caught me, she accused me of stealing. I asked Romello to tell the truth, but he didn't. I was taken here and severely punished. And when it came to fights, even if it wasn't my fault, I was the one tied to a bench and beaten. I'd be bedridden for days, running high fevers. To my mother, my mistakes were always mine, and my siblings' mistakes were mine too. There were too many incidents like this to count."
Mavis listened, shocked. She had always assumed Nathaniel grew up privileged, never imagining he had suffered so much as a child.
"How could she be so biased? You were all her children, her own flesh and blood," Mavis questioned, referring to Vanda.
Nathaniel did not explain. Instead, he smiled and asked, "Are you feeling sorry for me?"
"As if! There must be a reason for the favoritism. You were probably just a troublemaker as a kid. You brought it on yourself," she retorted, looking away.
Nathaniel chuckled softly and stated, "If you ever want a divorce again, we'll sign another agreement. Callum's custody will still be with you. I promise, and I won't go back on my word."
Lionel had told him that using force was despicable and would only backfire. Only sincerity could win someone's heart.
Nathaniel had taken the advice to heart and reflected on his mistakes. From now on, he would give Mavis the space she needed.
"Really?" Mavis raised an eyebrow, looking at him teasingly.
"If you don't believe me, we can sign a new one right now while Grandma's not here."
Looking at his serious face, Mavis suddenly found him somewhat adorable. Her usually innocent eyes showed a glimmer of mischievousness as she rummaged through her bag.
Quickly, Mavis pulled out another document, proudly waving it in front of Nathaniel.
"What's this?"

The readers' comments on the novel: Wait, She’s a Billionaire (Sheena Lawson)
The novel is too abusive it spoils the joy of reading it. I hate the punishment part between sheena and Eliot....
