Charlotte sighed, “Yeah, today’s wedding is really something. They’ve practically invited everyone who’s anyone in our social circle.

“The Dawson family has hit a rough patch lately. With Zachary’s situation, they’ve been getting a lot of bad press.”

Sophia said, “So the Dawson family is going all out to reaffirm their ties with the Hartwick family”

Charlotte nodded, as if something had just occurred to her. She turned to Sophia and said, “My grandfather mentioned that besides Miles, there’s supposed to be another mysterious gentleman from the Hartwick family showing up.”

Sophia raised an eyebrow. “And who might this mysterious gentleman be?”

Charlotte shook her head. “No idea.”

The car stopped at the foot of the mountain. There was only one road leading to the Dawson estate, but it was jammed with a long line of luxury cars for the wedding.

With no way to drive any further, they had to get out and walk the rest of the way.

Sophia and Charlotte had just stepped out of the car when Dorian’s voice rang out from behind, “Hi, Sophia.”

Dorian and Evander arrived together, right behind them. As soon as they got out of the car, Dorian came running over.

“Sophia, wait for me. I’ll go in with you,” Dorian said cheerfully, then turned to Charlotte with a bright smile Hi, Charlotte, long time no see.”

Charlotte nodded and said, “Hi, how have you been feeling?”

Dorian beamed sweetly. “Now that Sophia takes me out to have fun, I feel so much better.”

Sophia didn’t say anything. Dorian, on the other hand, looked absolutely excited, his eyes darting from guest to guest as if searching for the juiciest

gossip.

Some who recognized Sophia and Dorian looked uneasy and hurried away.

Charlotte shot Sophia a look, hesitating as she tried to explain. “Sophia, I-”

Sophia said frankly, “Charlotte, with all the gossip in our social circle, how could I not know you?”

Charlotte paused for a moment, then broke into a smile.

Sophia said, “Charlotte, I know you joined the police academy to stay out of the Grant family’s power struggles. You were sick of all the scheming and backstabbing, of watching relatives turn on each other. That’s why you walked away from your family.”

Noticing Charlotte’s stunned expression, Sophia gave her a playful wink and smiled. “Am I right?”

Charlotte looked at her, her eyes full of complex emotions.

Sophia kept her smile. “You know, I can read fortunes. Want me to give you a reading? Charlotte, the case you’re working on right now–you had to let the suspect go because you’re missing a crucial piece of evidence.”

Charlotte stared at Sophia in stunned silence until the blaring car horn behind snapped her back to reality. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself

down.

Sophia continued with a sly smile, “I know exactly where that crucial evidence is.”

Charlotte, who had just regained her composure, suddenly whipped her head around. Her eyes widened in shock. “Do you have any idea what you’re saying?”

“Wait,” Charlotte cut her off, taking several deep breaths. After a long pause, she fixed Sophia with a stern look. “Don’t say anything yet. After the wedding, you’re coming with me to the police station.”

Sophia winked playfully. “Charlotte, you’re not planning to arrest me as some kind of fraud, are you?”

Charlotte sighed at her playful antics and said helplessly, “I’m asking you to assist in the investigation. If your lead proves useful, there’s a monetary

reward.”

Sophia squinted playfully at her and said, “Thanks, Charlotte.”

Dorian eagerly raised his hand. “Count me in too.”

Hearing Dorian’s voice, the crowd quickened their steps even more, scrambling to put as much distance between themselves and him as possible.

After passing through the estate gates, Charlotte presented the wedding invitation before she and Sophia made their way toward the courtyard.

At the entrance, Melody stood in a sheath dress alongside Griffin and a middle–aged couple in festive attire, welcoming guests.

“Charlotte, you actually came,” Melody said. Her smile froze for a moment, then widened into an even more dazzling, exaggerated grin.

Melody clasped Charlotte’s hand with feigned warmth, beaming. “My apologies, darling. You know how hectic wedding preparations can be. It completely slipped my mind to send you an invitation. But I’m truly delighted you could make it.”

This was clearly a dig at Charlotte, implying she didn’t even have an invitation and had gatecrashed the event. Others might think, ‘With all the city’s elite gathered here today, what else could an uninvited guest be after but to snag herself a wealthy partner?‘

It had been nearly a decade since Charlotte left the Grant family, and in all those years, she hadn’t attended a single high–society event. Most had long forgotten what she even looked like.

When Melody finished speaking, the others couldn’t help but eye Charlotte critically–the meaning behind those looks was all too clear.

Charlotte appeared indifferent, but Sophia knew the real reason she had come. It was not just because of the Grant family, but also because of her.

Sophia shot back, “So what you’re saying, Ms. Kensington, is that we’re just here to mooch off your wedding?”

Melody hadn’t expected her to be so blunt. Her smile faltered for a moment. “You’ve misunderstood. That’s not what I meant at all.”

“Glad that’s not what you meant. You and Charlotte were high school classmates. You should know she’s from the Grant family. Here, look at this. The Dawson family’s wedding invitation to the Grant family.” Sophia deliberately enunciated it.

Those skeptical glances turned back to Charlotte once more. As they studied her features and age, distant memories clicked into place–she was none other than the Grant family’s heiress.

“Wait? You’re Charlotte Grant?” an elder well–acquainted with the Grant family suddenly blurted out.

Charlotte smiled warmly, “Sir, it’s been such a long time.”

The middle–aged man laughed heartily, “So it really is you. They say girls blossom with age. Look at you, all grown up now.”

While Charlotte exchanged pleasantries with the elder, Melody stood frozen in shock, completely dumbfounded, while even Griffin’s expression darkened.
