"On the day I was kidnapped, I heard those men talking outside. They mentioned Nathaniel and called him Mr. Nicholls with great respect. When they beat me, they said I'd offended someone untouchable and shouldn't dream of what wasn't mine. The day you saw me off at the airport, I hugged you goodbye. Nathaniel must have found out. He was jealous and vengeful, so he did this to me. Mae, don't let him fool you!"
Mavis shook her head. "At first, I thought the same. But knowing Nathaniel, if he'd done it, he wouldn't deny it. He's usually honest about his actions. Last night, his expression told me he felt genuinely wronged. He even stabbed himself with a pen to prove his innocence. He—"
"Mae," Evan interrupted, "How many times has he used these tricks on you? Are you going to fall for it again?"
Mavis fell silent.
"I heard the kidnappers with my own ears. Don't you believe me? Are you going to trust him instead?"
She sighed. "I believe you, but I think there might be more to this story. Is it possible… you misheard the kidnappers, or they said it on purpose for you to hear?"
Evan was shocked. "You'd come up with such excuses to defend him?"
"What do you want me to do?"
Evan stared at her with resentful eyes, saying nothing.
"The National Investigation Bureau is still investigating. We don't know the whole truth yet. Even if Nathaniel is guilty, we need concrete evidence, right?"
Evan turned away, silent and sad, his eyes gradually filling with tears. His spirits had been low since his terrible injury.
Mavis felt guilty and added, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to argue. I know bringing this up only reminds you of the trauma. Trust me, and trust the bureau. If Nathaniel truly did something unforgivable to you, neither I nor the law will forgive him."
Evan looked out the window, his mood hardly improved.
Mavis sighed and stood to leave.

The readers' comments on the novel: Wait, She’s a Billionaire (Sheena Lawson)
The novel is too abusive it spoils the joy of reading it. I hate the punishment part between sheena and Eliot....
