Mavis adjusted Evan's pillow, propping him up so he could sit with his paralyzed legs.
Evan's gaze never left her face.
His eyes were filled with adoration and intensity as he asked, "Mae, if the National Investigation Bureau proves Nathaniel is behind this, will you divorce him?"
"Yes," she answered decisively, "But we have a child together. That's a connection we can never sever."
If they divorced and she got custody of Callum, Nathaniel would still need to pay child support monthly, even if she felt capable of raising her son on her own.
Evan frowned, his tone dejected. "If only you didn't have a child together…"
Mavis remained silent. Callum had been a child she had wanted, conceived accidentally due to faulty contraception. He was her whole world.
She could live without a husband, but not without her son.
Suddenly, an urgent knocking came from the door, followed by Troy's anxious voice.
"Mrs. Nicholls, Mr. Nicholls's wound has worsened. It didn't pierce his heart, but it may have damaged nearby blood vessels. He's just had a heart attack and lost consciousness. Please come quickly!"
"What?" Mavis exclaimed, immediately standing to leave.
"Mae! Mae, don't!" Evan tried to stop her, but he could not move his hands.
Mavis turned back. "Don't worry, I'm just going to check on him. I'll call Dylan to come and stay with you. Tell him what you want for breakfast."
"Mae…" Before Evan could call out again, Mavis had disappeared through the doorway.

The readers' comments on the novel: Wait, She’s a Billionaire (Sheena Lawson)
The novel is too abusive it spoils the joy of reading it. I hate the punishment part between sheena and Eliot....
